Title: Royal Society of Edinburgh Recognises Dundee Scientists
Motion Text:
That the Parliament recognises that The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) has awarded Professor Doreen Cantrell, of the University of Dundee’s School of Life Sciences, the Society’s Sir James Black Medal for her pioneering cell signalling and immunology research; understands that Professor Cantrell is a world-leading researcher on cell signalling, which are the mechanisms that control the function of key immune cells, and that she is the first woman to have been awarded the medal; recognises that the University’s Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) has been awarded the prestigious Mary Somerville Medal for teamwork and collaborative endeavour, which has led to real world impact; understands that six compounds on which the DDU has worked have entered human clinical studies and that their work has helped to enable the formation of six spin-out companies and nine discoveries licenced to pharmaceutical companies; notes that the Drug Discovery Unit has been recognised by the RSE as having the largest academic drug discovery team in the world, and believes that the awards represent welcome recognition of what it sees as the incredible, life-saving work being done in Dundee.
